How to reinvigorate a popular Manhattan cocktail bar with a sympathetic intervention was the underlying theme of the brief. Our proposal focused on the work of Thomas H. Handy, after whom the original bar was named. He was the creator of the Sazarec cocktail, a fact which informed our design.
We proposed a layout divided into four distinct areas:
Each was influenced by an ingredient or process relevant to the creation of the Sazerac cocktail. This resulted in an eclectic mix of areas in which clientele could enjoy their drinks.
We proposed to strip back walls to reveal existing timber panelling and rustic brickwork and recommended the retention of the existing ceiling and floor. We complemented the retained elements with soft finishes such as suede textured wall panels and paintings on canvas. Existing furniture and was upgraded and included:
