Contemporary Loft conversion over main house and outrigger

  • Remodel existing first floor of apartment
  • Create two new bedrooms at loft level with bathroom

A family seeking more space with a modern layout in their East London home turned to Bhuler Design. We realised their vision by extending the existing first floor kitchen and dining area through relocating the bathroom to the loft extension. This allowed for the creation of a spacious living and dining area with separate WC in place of the bathroom.

In the loft, we designed a master bedroom with bathroom over the main area of the apartment, and created a second bedroom over the outrigger.

We ensured the loft extension and its windows were sympathetic to the existing facade of the house, and recommended a material palette that enhanced the form of the extension. Other key design features included:

  • A main dormer designed to span the party walls.
  • A roof line set below the existing ridge height
  • A set-back dormer for the second bedroom
  • Space for the creation of a green roof
  • A stepped, visual hierarchy of the two dormers
  • Use of zinc to accentuate the extensions’ vertical and horizontal lines
  • Brickwork that complemented the surrounding Victorian properties
